Should I pay for Google Ads?
Google will happily take your money. The question is whether it should have it yet. For a local service business, ads can absolutely work, and they are also the most common way owner-operators set fire to a marketing budget. The difference is almost never the ads themselves. It is what the click lands on.
What ads actually do
An ad buys one thing: a visit from someone searching your kind of work. It does not buy their trust, their enquiry or their booking. The moment they land on your page, the ad’s job is over and the page’s job begins. If the page is thin, reviewless or hard to act on, the visitor leaves, and you paid for the privilege. Buying traffic for an unconvincing page is hiring a bouncer to usher people into an empty room.
The free layer comes first
Before spending a dollar, take the free visibility that is sitting on the table: a Google Business Profile for map results, and a complete Soho’s listing with services, suburbs, credentials, photos and reviews. Many owner-operators find this alone fills the calendar, because most local jobs go to whoever shows up looking trustworthy, and showing up looking trustworthy is free.
When ads make sense
Paid search earns its place in specific situations: a new business in a competitive trade that needs volume before organic visibility matures, an emergency service where being first matters, or pushing into a new suburb. If that is you, the readiness test is simple: does the destination convert? Reviews present, booking button working, enquiry form tested. Ads amplify what exists. Amplifying a strong profile multiplies enquiries; amplifying a weak one multiplies waste.
Count what comes back
If you do spend, decide in advance how you will know it worked: enquiries and bookings, not clicks. Clicks are what Google sells you; jobs are what pay you. Run it for a defined period, count won work against spend, and be willing to stop. The businesses that use ads well treat them like a tap, on when there is a gap to fill, off when the free layer is carrying the load.
