Holly Mahoney is a visual artist working from a studio in Brookvale on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. She paints seascapes and figurative subjects in oil on linen, and draws in charcoal, ink and pastel on artist paper, with the Northern Beaches coastline a recurring subject.

Common questions

Can I commission a painting of a specific beach?

Yes. A commission starts with a brief covering the size, colours and scene, and you can supply photo references or nominate a preferred view. Past commissions have covered surf spots, rock pools, sunrises and sunsets along the Northern Beaches and the wider Sydney coast.

How long does a commissioned artwork take?

Allow about 8 to 10 weeks from the approved composition to the finished painting. If you want the work framed, add drying time plus roughly 2 to 3 weeks. You see the painting at intervals and again at about 95 per cent complete, so final adjustments can be made.

What mediums does Holly work in?

Paintings are oil on linen or canvas, and works on paper are drawn in charcoal, ink and pastel. Each piece is an original rather than a print.

Do you run art classes?

Yes. The Art Academy offers drawing fundamentals, watercolour, life drawing and classes for teenagers, and all levels are welcome. Life drawing events are also held with the Underground Sketch Club, which Holly founded.
